Abstract

A prototyping process using a low-melting-point metal was developed for product design education. In this process, a model is printed using PVA (polyvinyl alcohol, poval) on an extrusion-type 3D printer, which is widely used for consumer products. After the model is covered with patches of silicon coated paper and dissolved in water, a transfer mold is created and low-melting-point metal is cast. One of the characteristics of this process is in that the water solubility of PVA enables lost casting with simple equipment and water. This proposal is expected to be one of the methods to create design prototypes of generative shape models, which have become popular in recent years, using materials that are not used in 3D printing.
