Abstract

This study investigated the effects of sketching using brush pens and digital tools on design idea generation and creativity. As digital tools become more prevalent, the potential value of traditional brush pen sketching remains underutilized. Conducted through sketch experiments and interviews with 11 design-experienced students, the results revealed that calligraphy pens encourage deep contemplation and unique expression, while digital pens promote rapid ideation. These findings suggest integrating both tools to enhance design creativity and underscore the importance of further exploring their roles in modern design workflows.
