Abstract

Developed before World War II, photo-typesetting became popular after the war and completely changed the face of graphic design and typography in the United States in the 20th-century. This study first traces the technical background to the introduction of photographic technology, and then focuses on the sans serif type, which is a symbol of the modern era, to make clear the development of new typeface designs. The technological shift from movable type to photo-typesetting increased the efficiency of typesetting and printing, and made it possible to express characters more freely. In addition, with the participation of lettering artists, a new direction was found in the geometric sans serif typeface, and the rich idea of adding serifs was a development unique to the United States in the 1970s.
