Abstract

This study investigates how map structures and spatial cues in consumer video games influence player behavior, focusing particularly on exploratory motivation. By extracting and classifying “exploration cues” from a selection of games released between 1990 and 2023, this study reveals five categories of spatial prompts and examines their impact on player movement and engagement. The results suggest that the density, diversity, and context-sensitivity of such cues are crucial in keeping players immersed and motivated.
