Exploring Positive Representations of Subcultures through Educational Manga:A Case Study of“Oshi-katsu”

Abstract

This study explores the potential of depicting “oshi-katsu” (fan activities) as educational manga based on the expanded definition of “gakushū manga. ” Drawing from recent scholarship and the “This Is Also Gakushū Manga” project, it considers how subcultural themes can foster incidental learning and diversity awareness. Through creating a manga narrative rooted in personal experience, the study aims to bridge entertainment and education, offering a positive re-evaluation of subcultural engagement as a form of meaningful learning.
