Many characters are created and consumed in Japan.
In this paper, we focused on the visual elements of characters and established grouping criteria for character design. Then, using this grouping, we conducted a questionnaire survey on the formative factors of healing characters, and the results revealed commonalities and characteristics of the formative factors of healing characters.
In the grouping of characters, we focused on the “use” and “media form” of the characters and classified them based on the image given to the viewer. Then, using this grouping, a questionnaire was created using famous characters to investigate what aspects of the character's facial design were healing. A total of 20 characters were selected equally from each classification based on a ranking of popular characters, and the questionnaire content consisted of a 5-point rating of whether the character was healing or not, and multiple responses to items that were healing among the six facial parts and facial expressions.
