Abstract

This study explores the concept of Ma—understood as spatial, temporal, and psychological in-between moments—within everyday life in a highly accelerated information society. In contexts shaped by digital media and the attention economy, such moments tend to be overlooked despite their relevance to well-being. Focusing on university students, home-visit interviews were conducted with 20 students from 5 universities in Kyoto. Through observations of living spaces and daily routines, the study reveals how small forms of Ma are consciously created to take distance from speed rather than adapt to it. These practices are categorized into three types: creating rhythms of time, stepping away from speed, and cultivating mental space. Based on these findings, a booklet, workshops, and an exhibition were designed, demonstrating how design can support reflection and gently reshape everyday life perception without enforcing behavioral change.
