Abstract

This paper describes the "Furoshiki" (Japanese cloth wrapping) as a living tool. The written historical materials and some remains are taken up to analyze designs including functions, forms, and ways of use as living tools. The following has been clarified: (1)The word "Furoshiki" was written in earlier Edo era. "Hiratutsumi" was ever used in Heian era. (2) The "Furoshiki" was initiated in the late 6th century, the Asuka period. Two kinds of design are found in the remains of the prince Shotoku. (3) The "Furoshiki" in Shoso-In treasures in Nara provides varieties of wrapping which use multiple "Furoshiki"s in chests to keep precious goods. (4) They were also used for diplomacy and trading with countries Shiragi and Bokkai. It was found that the specifics of the culture of lifes in Japan with long history is reflected in "Furoshiki".
