This paper presents an analytical result of electric field distribution in snowpack. The purpose of the paper is to investigate how the electric field distributes in snowpack due to radar antenna positioning aimed for the efficient detection of buried objects. Based on the boundary element method, the field radiated from a two-dimensional horn antenna has been calculated. It is found that the spacing between the antenna and the snow surface is the important factor for the deep sounding. The field strength inside the snowpack varies as much as 4dB by the spacing. This fact was verified by a laboratory experiment using lossy materials.
