Abstract
Purpose : In the administration of total parenteral nutrition solution at the clinical dose of 200kcal/kg/day as total calories, after mixing of trace element preparation in growing rats, hepcidin-25 is induced by non-colloidal iron originating from the trace element preparation. This study investigated the influence of the mixing volume of the trace element preparation in the total parenteral nutrition solution on hepcidin-25 induction.
Method : Hepcidin-25 was measured after administration of the total parenteral nutrition solution with different mixing volumes of trace element preparation at a dose of 200kcal/kg/day as total calories in growing rats. The mixing volumes of the trace element preparation were one-half and one-quarter of the clinical dose. As a control, trace element preparation without iron was administered.
Results : The induction of hepdicin-25 was confirmed after administration of the total parenteral nutrition solution mixed with trace element preparation corresponding to onehalf the clinical dose ; the administration of total parenteral nutrition solution formulated with the trace element of one-quarter of the clinical dose did not induce hepdicin-25.
Discussion : This study suggested that there is a relationship between hepcidin-25 and the mixing volume of the trace element in the administration of total parenteral nutrition solution to growing rats.
