Pain is closely associated with psychological stress, and the interaction between the two poses a critical challenge in the treatment of patients with chronic pain. Yokukansan (YKS), a Japanese traditional medicine that has been used for centuries, has demonstrated anxiolytic, anti-stress, and analgesic effects. The constituent herbal components of YKS exhibit various mechanisms of action, including inhibition of excitatory synaptic transmission, restoration of inhibitory synaptic function, suppression of glial cell activation, and modulation of descending pain control systems.
Furthermore, both basic and clinical research has shown that YKS is highly effective in treating refractory pain conditions such as neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia. It has also proven beneficial for patients who did not respond to conventional therapies. Additionally, YKS exerts anti-stress and anxiolytic effects by regulating the serotonergic nervous system, suppressing orexin secretion, and promoting oxytocin secretion. These effects have also been shown to improve behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.
This multifaceted pharmacological profile suggests that YKS holds promise as a therapeutic agent for pain disorders and stress-related conditions.
