Abstract
The following study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of surgical intervention on the duration of home-therapy. The subjects of the study were terminal patients with gastric cancer who had a passage disturbance of G1 tract due to the progress of peritoneal dissemination.
Twenty-three patients who had been in such a condition over the past twenty-three years were studied. These patients were divided into two groups; patients with upper G1 tract stenosis(n:6) and patients with lower G1 tract stenosis(n:17). Comparisons were made of the differences in clinical course between the two groups.
As a result of the study,we found that only one patient in the first group(upper G1 tract)had home-therapy,for 16 days, and ten patients in the second (lower G1 tract)had an average 288 days of home-therapy. In other words, surgical intervention was found to be significantly effective for the second group. Of the patients with rectal stenosis in particular, some gained the ability to take food orally over long periods of time after colostomy.
