Abstract
We analyzed some 20 ostomates from southern Boso in CHIBA Prefecture, nine of which were very closely observed. The problems of ostomates persist from preoperative periods until death and involve many different aspects, ranging from physical problems to social and psychological difficulties, especially those resulting from social stigma. Our study indicates that aftercare must be further concerned with the postoperative period. We attempted to provide indivualized counseling and aftercare service in patients'homes(home aftercare service),as well as in the hospital. In eight of nine patients,we have succeeded in improving quality of life and providing a greater will to live. Given greater support in dealing with the problems these patients face,we feel that a more satisfactory life can be achieved.
