Abstract

With prolonged lifespan of populations, relearning has been attracting attention in recent times. Therefore, our study explored the reason and support required for relearning through a questionnaire and interviews of 28 university graduates who had restudied Medical Care Courses at Professional Training Colleges (PTCs).

Our findings revealed that changing careers was the main purpose of relearning in Medical Care Courses at PTCs. “Financial support” was the first necessary support. Simultaneously, support of parents and family members encouraged relearning and became indispensable. Relearning resulted in an improvement in self-affirmation. Acquiring confidence through learning methods unique to PTCs that accentuate knowledge and skills with a focus on professional practice formed the background to the high level of satisfaction of working adults who had completed their studies.

The significance of this paper is that it clarifies a part of the actual situation of relearning in Medical Care Courses at PTCs and proposes, as a policy, the development of educational programs for working adults that take advantage of the characteristics of PTCs education, and further expansion of economic support.
