Abstract
This short essay is part of the research on the process regarding the establishment of Technology • Home Economics in South Korean junior high schools. This paper focuses on the post-1980s era. More specifically, the paper focuses on the period following the birth of the Chun Doo-hwan regime which came about as a result of a military coup in 1980. The process of establishment of the compulsory subject for boys in junior high schools, Practical Technology, which was newly established by the 4th National Curriculum in 1981, was empirically researched and analyzed. As a result, the following points have been elucidated: 1. Practical Technology introduces Home Economics content which focuses on teaching the consumerist viewpoint in family life in an innovative and positive manner 2. Like Home Economics which was taught only to girls, Practical Technology is a compulsory subject that targets only boys and is a single-gender subject which conforms to the old model. 3. This has been influenced to a large extent by the great Women’s education movement which made Home Economics a pillar of the curriculum
