Abstract

In recent years, the number of fatal and serious bicycle-related accidents has been decreasing because of law revisions and advances in public information for the safe use of bicycles. However, the rate of fatal bicycle accidents in Japan is higher than in other advanced countries, therefore, it is still necessary to take measures for bicycle-related accidents. In this study, bicycle-related accidents were selected from open traffic accident data, organized the characteristics of bicycle-related accidents. In addition, the conditions under which bicycle-related accidents are most likely to occur were clarified using association analysis. As a result, we showed that ; bicycle-related fatalities are more likely to occur under the conditions that “locations without traffic signals” and “the bicycling party is 65 years old or older”; for accidents involving pedestrians are more likely to occur under the conditions that “single road”, “locations without traffic signals”, “the bicycling party is 24 years old or younger” and “the collision site was in front” ; and single-pedestrian accidents are more likely to occur under the conditions that “single road”, “locations without traffic signals” and “the bicycling party is 65 years old or older”.
