In developing countries, the rapid expansion of urban areas along with economic development results in various urban problems such as traffic jams. In order to solve these problems, appropriate urban planning based on the updated travel demand forecasts considering rapid growth is necessary. However, it is difficult to conduct person trip survey frequently. In this context, the planners expect the use of GPS probe data as an alternative travel survey. This study aims to propose the availability of GPS probe data for that purpose. We detected trips, then derived travel purposes and travel modes from the commercially available data in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Through comparison with existing person trip surveys, we summarized the characteristics and challenging issue of GPS data, and then validated the possibility of replacing and complementation of existing person trip surveys.
