Marine Observation Satellite-1 (MOS-1), the first Japanese earth observation satellite, is intended to establish fundamental technologies for earth observation satellite, primarily by observing oceanic phenomena such as ocean color and temperature. It is planned to be launched by a two-stage N-II Launch Vehicle in early 1987 from Tanegashima Space Center (TNSC) of National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), and placed into a sun-synchronous and near-recurrent orbit at an altitude of about 909 km. Outline of MOS-1 system and operation is described in this paper.
