Abstract
January, 1980, we isolated a virus (N 808) which could not be neutralized by Schmidt's pooled antibodies. Physico-chemical analysis revealed that this virus belonged to the enterovirus subfamily. Enteroviruses, especially Coxsackieviruses of group A are known to be difficult to identify, because many viruses do not produce a recognizable cytopathic effect in readily available tissue culture systems. We thus applied micro-ELISA to identify N 808 strain and found that, among anti-enterovirus antibodies, only anti-Cox. A-17 antibodies reacted well to the N 808 strain. The result of the cross neutralization test between the standard strain of Cox. A-17 (G-12) and N 808 strain showed that the antigenicities of both viruses were partially common.
We concluded that N 808 strain belonged to Cox. A-17. N 808 strain was not pathogenic to sackling mice. Anti-N 808 antibody titer in the sera of Nagoya citizen was negligibly low showing that no epidemic infection occured in a past few years.
