The nature of coaching can be regarded as a chain of decision-making. In order to make better decisions, coaches need not to solely rely on their own experience, but also they should learn from others. An established coach’s underlying philosophy is employed when he or she must make difficult or instantaneous decisions; it can also help the coach offer better guidance. However, while there has been a rise in the amount of qualitative research seeking to understand the aims and practical knowledge acquisition process of elite athletes, there are few studies that focus on the underlying philosophy and approaches of coaches to consider the matter from a coaching perspective.
In this study, data were gathered from six male and female volleyball coaches at top-tier high schools through an interview survey and SCAT analysis to identify participants’ coaching outlooks. The study results can be used to pass on the practical knowledge of elite practitioners to
the next generation of coaches.
The analysis shows that all six coaching outlooks place the greatest emphasis on “future growth of the players” and are based on “study”, “context
explanation”, “ clear expression and enforcement of goals”, and “positive coach-athlete relationships”.
