Abstract
To study the mechanisms of morphogenesis in salivary gland, we previously established the RSMG-1 cell line derived from submandibular gland of 10-week-old Wistar female rats in serum-free culture. Using RSMG-1 cells, we determined the effect of TGF-β on growth and morphogenesis of RSMG-1 cells. TGF-βinhibitedth e RSMG-1 cell proliferation in dose-dependent manner. The effective concentration of TGF-β was lower than that of activin. In threedimensional serum-free collagen gel culture, TGF-β at low concentration induced branching morphogenesis of RSMG-1 cells although TGF-β at high concentration inhibited it. These findings suggest that TGF-β might function in the morphogenesis of salivary gland.
