In order to quantitatively clarify filaments motion in opening states where tangling parts are generated in interlacing process, filaments motion near the air jet nozzles in an interlacer was taken from the yarn running direction by a highspeed video camera. Then velocity vectors of multiple filaments were obtained by PIV analysis of the photographed image, furthermore filaments motion and its characteristics were discussed. Results obtained are as follows: (1) The speed of filaments was extremely lower than air speed for driving the filaments. Both the mean filament speed at each location and its variation were higher in opening states than in tangling states. The filaments motion in opening states was symmetric with the symmetric plane of yarn passage and showed rotational motion in the left and right regions of the yarn passage. (2) Circumferential velocity component was small near the rotation center, and it was large in the extension regions of the air jet nozzles. The rotation direction of the filaments was the same as that of the spiral twin vortex which air jetting from the air jet nozzles forms. (3) The following characteristics were proposed to represent filaments motion: the position mean value of time mean speed, the position mean value of time mean angular speed, the number of rotations per opening term, the total amount of filaments crossing the symmetric plane of yarn passage per opening term and its position mean value of time mean speed.
