Abstract
This study focuses on additional guide phrases composition for tourism internship students in China and provides an analysis of three-way interviews between students, mentors, and instructors for improving the quality of tourism Japanese language education and additional guide phrases composition in Chinese universities. Our results showed that the students had difficulties to understand additional guide phrases composition contents and vocabulary, and employed redundant strategies such as giving additional information, paraphrasing, and exclusion of pointless phrases or sentences. The mentors encouraged the students by prohibiting memorization without deep understanding, and assisting introspection and reviewing the viewpoints of tourists when composing scripts. The instructors stressed the importance of memorizing textbook scripts since the additional guidance was infeasible. The results suggested the following three points to consider: the pedagogical repositioning of additional guide phrases composition, the reexamination of teacher roles in internships, and the cooperation between mentors and teachers.
