Using a thermal imaging camera in an attempt to detect nest of Tree Sparrows in roadside snow poles

Abstract

In this study, we conducted a pilot study using a thermal imaging camera to detect the nesting activity of small birds in metal pipes installed as snow poles on the side of a road. We determined that a single use of a thermal imaging camera was not enough to detect the presence of an active bird nest. We also obtained information about the surface temperature of nest frameworks made from different materials, such as bird boxes, and that of five bird species in different air temperatures.
