In medical mass screening of the inhabitants of a coastal district in Fukui Prefecture, venous blood samples were collected from 304 men ( aged 22-87 years) and 223 women ( aged 23-84 years). The correlation between the serum selenium (Se) concentration and the atherogenic index ( AI) was studied in relation to age, body mass index, daily cigarette consumption and daily alcohol drinking habits. Positive correlations were observed in the male smokers of non-daily drinkers and in the female subjects aged 60 and over, respectively. The positive relationship appeared to be in accordance with the mechanism for preventing oxidation of atherogenic lipoproteins.
