Abstract
This paper examines an apparently puzzling behavior of adverbial clauses of reason introduced by since. Despite the fact that since-clauses are not allowed to appear in the focal position and to be modified by focusing adverbials like only, they commonly cooccur with other focusing adverbials like especially. I argue that this can be explained by examining the difference between the two types of adverbials and the property of the since-clause in pragmatic-discourse terms. I also discuss related matters as to since-clauses postposed in a sentence-final position.
