Abstract
The amounts of frass and leaf consumption of herbivores in the canopies of a natural evergreen broad-leaved forest and a secondary mixed deciduous and evergreen broad-leaved forest in northern Kyushu were estimated, The total annual frass fall from Jun. 1981 to May 1982 was estimated at 18.01 and 19.81 g d.w./ m2, respectively. The frass in the natural forest from May to July was less than that in the secondary forest, while the frass in the secondary forest from August to April was generally less than that in the natural forest. These values are larger than those hitherto recorded in the subalpine and the cool-temperate forests in Japan. Leaf consumption was estimated at about 22.5-45.0 g d.w./m2・year in the natural forest and at about 24.8-49.5 g d.w./m2・year in the secondary forest ; the former being about 5.2-9.9 percent of annual approximate net production and the latter also being about 5.2-9.9%.
