An experiment was carried out to examine the effect of ketamine anesthesia by the “Micro-Mini” drip administration technique on the circulatory system. In it, thoracotomy (an operation for the removal of canine filariae) and laparotomy (panhystero-oophorectomy) were performed on 12 beagles (physical status : P.S. 2-3) under ketamine anesthesia by this technique. Satisfactory results were obtained from all the dogs, except one which had been administered with propyonylpromazine and thoracotomized. They seemed to indicate that five drugs used for premeditation in the maintenance of ketamine anesthesia by that technique on the dogs of P.S. 2-3 could be arranged in the decreasing order of efficacy as follows: droperidol>diazepam>thiopental>xylazine>propyonylpromazine. On the other hand, blood pressure and bodytemperature fell less remarkably and the time required for waking and recovery was shorter in dogs anesthetized with ketamine alone than in those anesthetized with ketamine after premeditation with a drug. The dose of ketamine required for anesthesia, however, was much larger in the former dogs than in the latter. This dose could be reduced when simultaneous administration with succinylcholine chloride took place.
