Abstract

Nodular lesions within the striated muscle supposedly due to sarcocystis infection were detected in all or a part of body in 267 of 49, 630 (0.54%) breeding sows slaughtered in Okinawa Prefecture from January 1990 to December 1993. The affected cases were distributed all over the prefecture increasing in number year by year, and the prevalence rate seemed to be higher in the central and southern Okinawa. The nodules were yellowish white in color with cheeseous or sand like contents and were of granulomatous lesion histopathologically. The degenerated cyst wall of S. miescheriana was seen at the center of nodules in 3 of 105 cases examined.
