Abstract
An endoscope was used to perform isolations for fungi and bacteria from the guttural pouches of 14 thoroughbred horses. Drug susceptibilities of the isolates were investigated.Emericella nidulansandAspergillus fumigatuswere isolated from 4 horses. Only the former was isolated from 3 horseseuthanized because of terminal prognosis.E. nidulanswas confirmed as the major causative agent ofguttural-pouch mycosis. Since 19 strains of bacteria were isolated from 13 horses, some of which demonstrated mycosis, itwas suggested that bacterial infection is common in cases of mycotic inflammation of the guttural pouch.Drug-susceptibility tests showed miconazole to be the most active antifungal agent (MIC =3.1μg/ml) againstE.nidulans, whereas amikacin and miocycline in combination were most effective against 30 bacterial isolates (100% sensitivity with this combination.) These 3 drugs, therefore, are thought to be useful in antibiotictreatment of equine guttural-pouch infection.
