Abstract
1) In ten canine cases of hookworm disease, the serum ionic calcium was 3.7±0.2mg/dl on the average. Compared with healthy dogs, the infected ones were in a state of significant reduction of ionic calcium in the serum below normal. 2) In an Ancylostoma carrier dog infected with larvae of Ancylostoma caninum, the serum ionic calcium showed no tendency to decrease remarkably during 47 days after infection. 3) In puppies infected with larvae by the oral route, slight reduction of ionic calcium in the serum below normal was observed 30 days after infection. All of those which showed no tendency for the serum ionic calcium to recover were led to death, suffering from such femarkable hypocalcemia as mentioned above. 4) In dogs and rabbitd from which a single large quantity or successive small quantities of blood had been taken, the serum ionic calcium exhibited a very similar variation to that found in dogs infected with A. caninum. 5) The leukocyte count and serum total protein which were determined simultaneously in the present experiments showed a remarkable decrease in fatal cases of infection.
