EFFECT OF CAPRYLOHYDROXAMIC ACID ON RUMEN CONTENT OF SHEEP AND INTESTINAL CONTENT OF RAT

Abstract

l. When sheep were fed a formula feed containing urea at 5079 level, the ureaseactivity in the rumen was reduced by the administration of caprylohydroxamic acid(CHA). At that time, no rapid production of ammonia in the rumen was observed in thecase of administration of CHA, althouglu the production of ammonia increased im-mediately after feeding in the absence of CHA.2. The total production of volatile fatty acids and pH in the rumen were notaffected by the administration of CHA.3. When rats were fed a diet containing 1% CHA, the ammonia level was loweredsignificantly in both portal and cardiac blood, especially in the former.4.
