In the combustion tuning of high speed, direct injection diesel engines, it is very important to optimize the cavity configuration on the piston crown. An understanding of the air motion induced in the combustion chamber is an important factor in combustion tuning. In order to investigate combustion phenomena, a surface flow visualization technique employing an oil film method was used to study the air motion in the combustion cavity of a single cylinder engine. In addition, a high speed camera was employed in the investigation of combustion phenomena.
As a result, it was confirmed that optimum combustion is obtained by having a suitable recess in the circumference of the cavity. The anthors describe here in detail a flow visualization study and the test results of engine performance in the study.
