A figure of merits of cathode material based on the Richardson-Dushman equation is proposed. Calculating the figure of merits of borides, carbides, nitrides, oxides and refractory metals, the characteristic features of these materials for the high brightness cathode are compared with each other. It is inferred that the carbides of transition metals are promising for a high brightness electron source.
