Investigation of an Aluminum Flange with an Electron Beam Modified Seal Edge

Abstract

  A lot of aluminum (A2219-T852) flanges, which have a knife-edge seal, have been used at the SPring-8 storage ring. We investigated an Electron Beam Modified (EBM) knife-edge seal for the flange¹⁾ to confirm a seal compatibility with the original A2219-T852 flange. In comparison with the original flange, we found that a proof stress is almost equal, and the EBM flange has higher hardness and creep rupture stress.
