We investigated nitric oxide (NO) on the Cu(100) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in order to understand elementary process of reduction of NO. In STM experiment at 5 K, monomeric NO was observed as a ring shaped protrution reflecting degenerated the 2π* orbitals. After annealing the surface, NO is changed to a depression. EELS experiment using isotopes revealed that this species is oxygen atom which is formed by dissociateon of NO.
