Effect of Treatment with Basidiomycetes on Feeding Values of Barley Straw

Abstract
To treat barley straw with Basidiomycetes for feed, the authors examined the fungal culture methods on barley straw substrates, the feeding values of straw treated with Basidiomycetes and the selection of fungal varieties (strains) which can degradate lignin markedly.
In the case of practical treating of baled straw with Basidiomycetes, it was judged that the use of the small size of baled straw (about 4.5kg in air dry weight) was necessary to lighten its weight and shorten the culture period.
Following to lignin decomposition in barley straw, the decomposition rate of it by cellulase increased. Straw substrates after harvesting eddible mushroom reduced by more 20% in dry matter weight than substrates treated with mycelium. On the other hand, the contents of crude protein, nitrogen free extract and each amino acid (except Met) in substrates treated with Basidiomycetes increased and feed compositions of barley straw were obviously improved by treating with Basidiomycetes. As a result of digestion trial by sheep, the digestivility of each component, DCP and TDN increased significantly and barley straw was obviously converted into the bulky feed which had high feeding values.
Edible Mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus TMI30026, TMI30032 and TBU1-85 were selected as strains which could degradate lignin markedly.
