By December 31st, 1997, the assessment of wind energy use in Germany led to a number of 5193 installed turbines with a rated power of 2, 081.6 MW. 849 turbines (each having a rated power of 5 or more kW) with a total of 533.97 MW rated power were installed in 1997 only. Compared to 1996, there was an increase in the newly installed capacity of 24.9% while the number of newly erected turbines increased only by 5.3%. Compared to the ‘best year’ 1995 (since the beginning of the development of wind energy use in Germany), there was an increase in the installed capacity by 5.7%. The average size of the newly installed turbines now comes up to 600 kW per unit. The estimated total capital investment in wind energy application in 1997 in Germany sums up to about 1200 Mio. DM
