Development of grain structure during friction stir welding of pure iron

Abstract

High-resolution electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) has been applied to study development of grain structure during FSW of pure iron. Microstructural evolution is shown to be a complex process driven by grain subdivision and finally leading to significant grain refinement. Material in stir zone is found to have strong ideal simple shear texture components.
