Abstract

Ultrahigh carbon steel having 1.0wt% C was friction stir welded after thermal processing for grain refinement. FSW produced the martenisitic structure in the stir zone, which caused the significant increase in hardness. Microstructural evolution of the weld could be reasonably explained using Fe-C phase diagram.
