Effect of Welding parameters on Strength and Microstructure in Aluminum alloy / Zinc coated steel friction stir joining

Abstract

We made aluminum alloy / zinc coated steel joint by friction stir joining. We selected tool rotation, tool pressure and welding time as welding parameters. The observation of the interface and fracture surface revealed that liquation cracking exists near the interface. The liquation cracking seemed to be caused by remaining zinc. It was found that the shear strength of the joint becomes higher when the more zinc was successfully discharged.
