The operation of Geographical Indications (GI) for alcoholic beverages in Japan varies widely, with different types of geographical areas obtaining certification and some regions obtaining certification for multiple types of alcoholic beverages. The strategies and operations differ by production area. The challenge in operating GIs lies in the need for operations tailored to the characteristics of each production area, while also seeking a system that is internationally recognized. It is expected that the number of regions obtaining GI certification will increase nationwide in the future. The utilization of GIs can become an important system for the survival of regions. To make the operation of the GI system in Japan internationally recognized, further research is needed to explore desirable operations.
