Abstract

A torispherical head is commonly used for the end plate of a pressure vessel. Many analytical and experimental studies were made to evaluate the discontinuity stresses of the head, but refined results have not been found. Recently, rigorous analysis were proposed, but these are not suitable for practical design use. Formerly, authors attempted a practical method of the analysis, that is, the finite difference method is applied to the toroidal part and the analytical solutions of the other parts are combined with the former, and the results by calculations were compared with experimental results on a few vessels. Now we made a pressure test of a large pressure vessel with torispherical head, and by the experimental results of stress measuring the adequacy of the proposed method was confirmed.
