Abstract

The velocity distribution in the turbulent boundary layer developing on the after body of a tanker model is measured in the towing tank. A new pressure type probe called "3-in-1 yaw probe" is used to measure the velocity magnitude and direction. The probe is traversed normal to the model surface using a specially designed traversing equipment with high accuracy. The measured velocity distributions are analysed and compared with Coles vector velocity profile. The integral paramenters calculated from the measured velocity profiles are compared with the results of the recently developed calculations of Himeno & Tanaka. Other characteristics of the three-dimensional boundary layer are also discussed.
