An optimal planning method is proposed to design propulsion plants for LNG carriers. A combined plant composed of diesel engine and gas turbines is investigated as an example of energy saving propulsion plants. As this plant is composed of many kinds of equipment and several kinds of energy are supplied by their parallel operation, there exist many alternatives on the constitution and operational policy of equipment. The planning problem is considered as a combinatorial optimization one in which the optimal constitution and operational policy of equipment are determined together with the optimal insulation thickness of LNG tanks in order to minimize the total annual cost, and is solved numerically by the application of the branch and bound algorithm. Through a numerical study for a combined plant of actual scale, it is ascertained that the proposed optimal planning method is useful for the rational design of the plant which excels in long-term economy.
