Abstract

A formulation is performed to analyze buckling strength of a rectangular plate with shear lag stress distributions in two perpendicular directions. In the formulation, shear lag stress distribution is approximated by parabola, and a simply supported condition is supposed along all edges for buckling deflection. For a simple case of uniform shear lag stress distribution, the buckling strength is obtained in a closed form. Some example calculations are carried out to demonstrate the buckling characteristics of a rectangular plate with shear lag stress distribution. As a practical case, the inner bottom plate of a ship's hull is analyzed assuming uniform stress and shear lag stress in the longitudinal and the transverse directions, respectively, and the influence of shear lag stress on the buckling strength is discussed.
