Lateral Vibration of Propeller Shaft

Abstract

Recently it is considered that some failures of propeller shaft and sleeve are ascribed to the lateral vibration of propeller shaft excited by hydrodynamic forces acting upon the propeller. The authors carried out the calculation of the natural frequency of the lateral vibration of shaft and measured it by a simple way on two ferry boats. Comparison between the calculation and the measurement shows that the natural frequency of vibration of the fundamental mode can be estimated pretty well by our approximate method of calculation.
