On the Selection of the Block-Coefficient of Super Tanker

Abstract

Looking over the data of super tankers built for these few years, we can easily see that the block-coefficients of those vessels are larger than the usual values of ordinary cargo ships, but can not find any definite standard on it. To determine the most economical block-coefficient, we calculated initial costs and earning efficiencies for super tankers with large block-coefficients using the results of the tank tests which have been carried out at our request by the Transportation Technical Research Institute. Our conclusion is, in a word, that it is not advantageous to choose larger blockcoefficient than 0.80, especially from a stand-point of earning efficiency.
