Abstract

The purpose of this study was to clarify the educational significance of Ecosystem-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR). Recently, torrential rains and floods have caused frequent disasters in Japan. Therefore, disaster prevention education is necessary for Japanese children. This study developed teaching materials from the Eco-DRR perspective for elementary school fifth grade students, entitled Function of Running Water. The theme of the teaching materials is the change to the shape of the estuary and the related land caused by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. The study revealed the educational potential of these materials. These materials could inspire the children to develop reverence for nature, which could be nurturing and destructive, and they could foster wisdom and philosophy for adapting to and living in harmony with nature instead of dominating it.
