Abstract
Over-all rate of thermal decomposition in wood and its components (cellulose, lignin) was measured at a low pressure (2 mm Hg) by the spring method.
The conclusions were as follows :
( 1 ) The over-all rate of carbonization of wood is composed of the rates of all components.
( 2 ) The rate of each component is given with the 1st order reaction formula.
( 3 ) Carbonization rate of components become large in order of hemicellulose, lignin, cellulose.
( 4 ) Activation energy of carbonization is estimated as follows ; cellulose 31 Kcal, lignin 26 Kcal.
( 5 ) Rate in atmosphere is larger than rate in low pressure.
( 6 ) Residuum of carbonization becomes large in order of lignin, wood, cellulose and its weight becomes small rapidly with increase of temperature.
